How to compose fairy tales to order and make money on them
The story of Pavel Parfin about how he and his family did their project, which allows him to earn money from fairy tales.
How did you find the idea?
My granddaughter Nastya gave me the idea. Before her birth, I wrote various stories in the genre of fantasy, unscientific fiction and ironic prose, and did not think of anything else. This does not mean that I was far from writing fairy tales – on the contrary, I told bedtime stories to two of my children (son and daughter) almost before their sixteenth birthday. You may skeptically notice that this is hardly possible.
The answer is: very possible. When the children were young, I told them about the little Hare and the Hedgehog, and when my children, thank God, turned 15, the tales began to have a clearly detective-erotic character. There was a lot of humor in the tales, so instead of “lulling” the children, I evoked a long, unrestrained “haha” among them … In short, it was a fun time.
Soon, however, the fabulous “source” dried up … The children grew up, enrolled and graduated from the university in due time, and the son in addition took and got married. And after a while, she gave me a granddaughter – Nastya. And then I suffered not childishly: I again began to write fairy tales. Not even a year has passed since I wrote the book Nastya Tales. That’s where I came off to the full! I “resurrected” my Bunny and Hedgehog, Hoku and Babaika, added a lot of other fairy-tale characters to them …
It seemed that success was obvious! .. However, the book did not go: it was not taken by any of the fifty publishers I contacted, and not a single local “fat man” wanted to finance my book. “Well, to hell with you!” – I thought in my hearts … and decided to write fairy tales to order. The calculation was simple: the customer of the fairy tale will finance it and read it without fail.
Summed up to this idea – writing fairy tales to order – my son, dad of my granddaughter. He is engaged in SEO and develops sites. At the beginning of 2011, he presented me with pavelparfin.com (Pavel Parfin – my creative pseudonym). Anton – that is my son’s name – said to me: “Dad, here’s your website. You can place your opuses on it. ” Well, I don’t need to beg for a long time. A lot of literary “junk” has accumulated, so the site turned out to be very useful.
How much time has passed from the idea to the launch?
Exactly from this moment (in the spring of 2011, when the site was created), a new era began – our era. By and large, we did not wait for customers – the first of them appeared to us completely unexpectedly. It happened in January 2012: the first customer came to us – from Kiev. The young woman decided to give her husband an original gift and, finding our site on the Internet, ordered us a fairy tale book about her precious wife and little son. I still clearly remember how we worked on our first book.
Everything was new: writing the text of a fairy tale to order, and design, and layout in the InDesign program, which my son mastered during the execution of the order, and printing … Printing, by the way, is still the most “sore” issue in our project. More precisely, not even printing, but the binding of a book. As it turned out, this is pure hand-made, because the production of single copies of the book requires special professional skill and skill. And in our time, finding a person who knows how to do something with their own hands, especially books, is not easy.
What is the state of the project now?
Since the beginning of 2012, we have created – namely, created – five books. These are very different books. “Magic Rally”, “Diamond for Lily”, “Ball named Maradona”, “Crystal Bridge”, “New Year’s party at the kindergarten”. When I pick them up, I start to think that they were written by five different authors. They have different stories, designed for different ages and destinies, they have different aura and energy …
One thing unites them: they cost the customer almost nothing, and they cost us a lot of work. But I feel great pleasure from the results of this work. After all, we grew from book to book! The design of the fourth and fifth books was developed by my sister-in-law Alexandra. When I saw these books coming out of print, I thought that a new talented designer was born.
Our books are unique and in demand. I can and I have the right to say so, because our books are bought: in Kiev, Kramatorsk, Sumy and Moscow (at the moment I am working on history for a customer from Mariupol). I believe that this project – like any project addressed to people – is the future.
We create an individual book culture – for individual, specific people. We create for them a cultural microcosm in which these people are simultaneously stars, and planets, and the people who inhabit them. We love our customers very much. As long as there are people like our customers who love books, books are immortal.
